http://www.domainedefondsaintjacques.comBuilt in the middle of the 17th century after the Carib Indians were wiped out from the Cabesterre area, the Fonds Saint-Jacques sugar refinery has been exploited by the Dominican friars among whom the most famous one was Father LABAT. Indeed, Fonds Saint Jacques Estate has become the 1st Estate in the Caribbean thanks to his ability to develop new techniques of rum and sugar production.
Place of memory and outstanding heritage, this ancient sugar plantation is today the property of the Conseil Général (Martinique’s local Council). In 2001, its “centre culturel de Rencontres” certification (i.e. cultural center for meetings) allows it to develop a science project related with oral traditions and more peculiarly with tale-telling. It is also a place of diffusion where cultural and artistic events take place all along the year.
